The Los Angeles Community College District hosted LARN’s BSI Kick-off event on September 9, 2016. All nine of LACCD’s campuses were represented, along with Taft College, Rio Hondo, and Crafton Hills. Executive Director Deborah Harrington welcomed the 26 participants and began the day discussing integration of student success initiatives and what colleges should be planning for. Jessica Cristo and Crystal Keikel led participants in discussions and activities that allowed them to reflect upon their successes implementing high impact practices and the related challenges. Activities included Integrated Crosswalk, Johari Windows and Who What Mapping. Integrated Planning helped participants surface the converging points between initiatives, while Johari Windows and the Who What Mapping allowed participants to determine available resources and professional learning support necessary for growth in their respective areas and daily practice.
The day concluded with a presentation on Los Angeles College Promise, which seeks to increase college access and completion for Los Angeles area residents and students of the district’s nine-colleges by eliminating the first year of community college tuition for students who graduate from an LAUSD high school. The initiative also expands opportunities for high school students to dual enroll in tuition-free college-level courses while in high school.
