The Beyond Financial Aid Toolkit workshop, held Friday, November 6 at the Los Angeles Community College District, was presented by LACCD, LUMNIA Foundation, and Achieving the Dream. The event drew 29 participants from 8 of the 9 campuses in the LA Community College District, including LACCD administrators. The goal of this workshop was to introduce the BFA toolkit, a measure designed to help two- and four-year institutions take meaningful steps to close attainment gaps for low-income students.. Facilitators discussed the importance of expanding the concept of “financial support” beyond grants, scholarships and loans to make college more affordable for students. They presented data on BFA’s six college-tested strategies for helping students overcome the significant challenges created by limited financial resources and discussed strategies for weaving expanded financial supports into a college’s success efforts. Participants were guided in mapping and identifying opportunities to offer support, and completing a self-assessment to determine their college’s service capacities.
